Seniors Exploring Photography, Identity and Appreciation (SEPIA)
The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) just launched a new initiative for San Diego’s senior citizens. SEPIA is a series of free, engaging programs that focus on the power of the photographic arts to transform your perspective and enrich your community. Take a completely free digital photography class to master your camera’s functions, and tour MOPA with an informative guide to truly appreciate its many photographic exhibits.
If you’re not up to a MOPA visit, you can still enjoy its world-class exhibits and learn from its photography experts. Thanks to SEPIA, the museum holds regular outreach presentations in local homes and Senior Centers. When you attend one of these free Outreach Tour art appreciation sessions, you’ll get an up-close look at photographs from their permanent collection. SEPIA always encourages an open dialogue, so even if you have no background in the visual arts, feel free to ask questions and express your opinions about photography.
NSAA San Diego
If you refuse to let your age slow you down, join the San Diego chapter of the National Senior Athletics Association (NSAA). NSAA San Diego is a MeetUp.com group that hosts monthly mixers for active adults over 50. Many of its members also attend weekly fitness presentations and performances throughout the community, in an effort to learn more about fitness and keep their minds as sharp as their bodies.
Join the group to participate in its informative, themed mixers, which focus on topics such as “Aging Well in the 21st Century” and “How to Injury-Proof Your Body”. You’ll also receive updates about local presentations by physical trainers, doctors, former professional athletes, and other senior fitness experts.
The focus of the inpatient rehabilitation is to prepare the patient to return home. A period of intensive therapy, at least 3 hours a day, is typically utilized to help regain the ability to function normally.
Kearny Mesa Bowl Senior Leagues
Kearny Mesa Bowl is one of San Diego’s most popular bowling alleys, with events and amenities that range from family bowling nights to karaoke nights at the Kingpinz bar. But if you’re a San Diego citizen over the age of 50, its best-kept secret is its official senior leagues.
If you bowled in the 1970s or 1980s, you’ll feel right at home in this retro-style bowling alley. Weekly senior league practice sessions start between 9 a.m. and noon. If you’re a newcomer, organizers Mary and Darlene will gladly help you find a compatible league to join. Beginner, intermediate, and expert bowlers are all welcome to play at Kearny Mesa, and affordable per-session fees range from $6 to $13.

The City of San Diego wants you to stay healthy and informed, so they provide hundreds of classes, events, and activities for local seniors through their official Park & Recreation Department. Most activities — such as “morning mindbenders,” piano classes, and bridge and mah jongg clubs — are completely free, but there are also cruises, dances, and other monthly events that you can attend for a small fee. Register at one of ten different designated Senior Centers to take advantage of these fun, uplifting, and often informative opportunities to socialize with your peers and enjoy your great city.
