Senior Expos in CaliforniaOsmondMarketing
Aging is inevitable, but some of its more sinister side effects – such as inactivity, poor health, and loneliness – are definitely not. If you’re 55 or older, it’s important to resist those clichés and embrace all the information and opportunities available to you. Fortunately, California is teeming with opportunities to make the most of your golden years, including a variety of annual senior expos that cater toward your interests and needs.
It’s easy to feel “out of the loop” compared to younger generations. However, your generation is aging with access to unprecedented technologies, and senior expos harness all of them to help you maximize your quality of life. From the websites that promote these events to the services they showcase, California’s senior expos will introduce you to products, peers, and professionals that could change your life. At the very least, each expo is a free way to sample new items, learn new information, and meet new people.
These upcoming senior expos, listed in chronological order, are among the biggest and best in the state:
Culver City Golden Future Expo
When: Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 10 AM to 3 PM
Where: Veterans Memorial Complex in Culver City, CA
The Golden Future Expo is a statewide event that takes place multiple times a year, each time in a new neighborhood or city. This allows seniors to interact with vendors and instructors from their own communities, in addition to learning about bigger brands and services that bring hands-on exhibits to each event. September’s expo in Culver City is the West Los Angeles version, and it’s one of the biggest.
Admission and parking are free, but pre-registration is recommended because of the event’s popularity. Once you’re inside, dozens of complimentary perks include health screenings, individual résumé reviews and career consultations, workshops, “brain” games, and live entertainment throughout the day. Come to the Culver City Golden Future Expo to sharpen your mind, boost your career, or simply relax in a massage chair.
Healthy Aging Summit and Senior Expo 2015
When: Thursday, October 1, 2015 from 10 AM to 2 PM
Where: Lakeside Pavilion in Chico, CA
Regular, comprehensive health screenings are critical after you turn 50. Even if you have no existing health problems, you’re responsible for maintaining your quality of life with prevention and early detection methods. Fortunately, Chico’s senior expo this October is full of free health screening and demonstrations for people your age. The Healthy Aging Summit and Senior Expo is designed to keep seniors independent by giving them access to important information about their own health, but your loved ones are also invited to come and learn about helpful tips and products too.
Chico’s Lakeside Pavilion also hosts free legal consultations throughout the year. If you’re 60 or older, schedule an appointment with Legal Services of Northern California on the first or third Thursday morning of any month.
San Fernando Valley Golden Future Expo
When: Saturday, October 10, 2015 from 10 AM to 3 PM
Where: Airtel Plaza in Van Nuys, CA
The Golden Future Expo will be in Van Nuys in October, offering a variety of free and fee-based services such as makeovers and career consultations. You can also browse the shopping corner, find new opportunities at a volunteer and job fair, attend workshops, play fitness games, and buy food from on-site vendors.
Golden Years Expo and Senior Health Fair
When: Saturday, October 31, 2015 from 10 AM to 4 PM
Where: Hyatt Regency Valencia and Santa Clarita Conference Center
For the third year in a row, Santa Clarita will host this extensive and exciting health fair for California seniors. Parking, admission, and health screenings are completely free, and door prizes include hundreds of California Lottery Quick Picks and 20 gifts valued at more than $50. Just pick up a free Golden Years Expo (GYE) Passport at the door, collect stamps from every vendor on the card, and turn it in to enter the drawing.
The prizes are promising, but the health screenings are still the main attraction. This year’s free offerings include heart, bone density, hearing, and grip strength tests. Attend 45-minute presentations to learn even more about hearing aids, heart health, protecting your financial assets, and veteran benefits.
Los Angeles Abilities Expo
When: February 5-7, 2016 from 11 AM to 4 PM
Where: Los Angeles Convention Center (website)
Los Angeles is one of six cities that hosts the Abilities Expo, an annual weekend-long event which unites and informs people with physical disabilities. Though it’s not age-oriented, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to enrich your post-retirement life and ensure a safer, healthier future. Workshop topics include buying the right accessible vehicle, adaptive gardening, living with a service animal, preparing for an emergency, and managing disease symptoms through better nutrition.
